Type of questions

Letter Types :

  • Formal: You don't know the recipient's name (logically), whom you are writing to (e.g. bank, foreign university).
  • Semi-Formal: You know the recipient mostly by name (logically). They may not be too close to you (e.g. teacher, landlord, manager, colleague).
  • Informal: You know the recipient personally (e.g. friends, family).

Essay Types:

  • Discussion and Opinion Based Essay:
  • This is one of the common IELTS Writing Task 2 essay questions. In this type of essay, the students are required to discuss two opinions given in the question statement and also they have to give their personal opinion (if asked).

  • Agree/Disagree Essay:
  • The other type of IELTS Writing Task 2 essay is the one where the students are given a statement and then they need to explain whether they agree or disagree with it.

    They can also partially agree and partially disagree on that statement, esp, when the question demands them to do so. It is always better to give a strong and clear opinion.

  • Direct Question/ Two Parts Essay:
  • In this IELTS Writing Task 2 essay type, the students get questions in two parts. There are two different parts of the question which they must answer.

  • Cause and Solutions Essay:
  • The other type of IELTS Writing Task 2 essay is the one where the students are required to list out causes associated with a particular problem and then they need to suggest probable solutions to it.

  • Advantages and Disadvantages Essay:
  • In this type of IELTS Writing Task 2 essay, the students will be writing about the advantages and disadvantages of something. They must answer both in order to meet the task requirement.
